Most people believe in God, go to church and pray. As human beings we need to believe in something or someone powerful. Faith keeps us alive in the most difficult moments in life. Believing in something or someone great releases pain, makes us feel at Peace.
We all want to be loved and accepted for who we are. We must have faith in ourselves.
My visual inspiration for this contemporary portrait painting comes from Spanish art. Granada means ‘pomegranate’, and if you travel there, you can see this symbol in art and decorum all around the city. I like how the Spanish stylized this fruit that reminds me of an open heart.
To design this oil painting I collect my references, sketch the idea and use Photoshop to make a complete visual model for the painting. My mood board looks something like this. I use one of my pictures of the model to place in the center of the painting, creating a flow of leaves, lines and pomegranate seeds around the portrait. I make a quick portrait study to understand how light turns the form on the face.
After that I make a drawing that I transfer onto my panel. Leafing requires a lot of prep work and a strong design strategy. I can’t touch or change it during the painting process (it contaminates & dulls the surface), which makes it very difficult to paint everything without having a second chance.
I wanted to depict an open heart without being overly dramatic. I also aim to highlight Elegance by designing the flow of leaves and seeds around the portrait.
