I’ve been interested in the spiritual side of humanity for many years, searching for answers in places near and far. While this very notion of asking God for something in a church felt foreign to me, I found solace in the philosophy of Buddhism for quite some time. Ornate Thai palaces seemed so different, yet welcoming. But the philosophy is just that. The philosophy. Removed from day to day pressures, commitments and deadlines,  the very essence of Buddhism will always remain unattainable.

I loved how peaceful the temples were in Japan. Simple and restrained they have refined beauty and aesthetics the Japanese carry in their culture. Nature is an integral part of all living and the spiritual can be found in a twig, rabbit or human. I think the Spiritual, unknown and unexplained makes us less mundane, more vulnerable, aware and accountable for our actions. Appearances can be deceiving but the spiritual shines through.

I enjoy painting the intangible states of the soul. In this painting I used a simplified version of mandala, placing it behind the female figure to bring this sense of Peace and Freedom I feel visiting the Buddhist temples or meditating, walking on the beach. I captured this airy feel in the lightness of her dress that melts into the background and becomes part of everything and nothing. One day I’ll achieve this state of freedom.
