Born around 610 B.C. Sappho was a Greek poet, the first to write poems, most of them about love. The woman of many legends, her poetry was studied and held in high regard throughout antiquity. Sappho coined the term “lesbian,” coming from the island of Lesbos.

I depict the young poet by the sea, contemplating her yet unwritten stories. While most of her poetry is now lost, she wrote poems designed for music accompaniment, and therefore I put a golden lyre, the musical instrument by her side. I had to re-invent the clothing on my model who wore a different dress during a photo shoot that didn’t match the ancient attire.

This surreal painting symbolizes a gifted woman writing her heart out by the sea.
