There are multiple levels of abandonment. This question of identity can be as philosophical, or as racial as someone experiences it. Cultural identity grows from our sense of home. As children we live in an idealized, loving world even when the world around us ain’t ideal because we are unable to comprehend and see beyond us. As we grow into adulthood, the ideal world breaks against jealousy, impudence, and betrayal no matter where you live. What “home” means gets shifted from a feeling of belonging to a state of abandonment, living in a foreign place.

As an immigrant, the world view is different, like wearing the eyeglasses with a unique perspective, granting the ability to see people from various points of view. Traveling outside your comfort zone, your country makes you see how vast and beautiful the world is, and how insignificant you are. Feeling abandoned is being no good for either side, neither a true American, nor a Russian now, too different from either culture. Living with grief and loss, the abandoned child cries inside to experience what’s been missing…
